NUT18: Use of data to set target grades for students, and appraisal objectives linked to performance-related pay for staff
The passing of exams seems to be the centre of education, with unreal targets leading to mental health problems. There is no evidence in small rural schools to show any links in achievement between KS2 and KS4. Data is being used as a weapon against teachers and is restricting to students. Teachers should refuse numerical driven targets. Conference wants the executive to lobby the government for independent research exploring factors that affect pupil progress and achievement, to highlight the flaws to OFSTED, DfE, to obtain data on the increased evidence of mental health problems, to support groups in challenging unreasonable targets, up to and including the use of strike action.
