NUT18: School Funding
Motion 12 focuses on the worsening financial situation in schools and calls on Union to continue to work with a broad alliance, e.g. Fair Funding for Schools, to ensure proper funding of schools.
Attention was drawn to the successful campaign the union ran at the last election and the very effective website schoolcuts.org.uk, which gave campaigners the figures they needed to campaign with. It is estimated the campaign influenced three-quarters of a million voters at the election.
Speakers emphasized that the policy of austerity was a choice and one that was damaging our children, with the most vulnerable being the hardest hit. The irony of money being found for projects like free schools and conversion to academies was highlighted. The pay freeze and recruitment crisis were also key features focused on by speakers.
The success of the recent UCL (university lecturers) action shows unions can oppose successfully and our union should learn from this. A call for a national campaign and a National Demonstration and a building of alliances with the public and parents.
